Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey, formally titled the Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster, is the oldest shrine of the British people, located in the historic district of Westminster. Traditionally coronations and burial of monarchs are held in this magnificent building, and since 1987, the abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For many centuries, Westminster Abbey has been an important center of education in the country. Also there is a treasury of paintings, stained glass, textiles and other artifacts here.

The cathedral church of St. Peter is saturated with more than a thousand-year history. According to legend, the first temple on this site was built in the VII century, after the image of the apostle Peter appeared to the local fisherman. In those times, Essex was ruled by King Sabert - the first Christian monarch.In written sources, Westminster Abbey was first mentioned in 960, when St. Dunstan formed at the church a community of Benedictine monks.The heyday of the church falls on the years of the rule of the monarch Edward the Confessor. On his orders, the old church was rebuilt into the greatest structure.In 1066 King Edward became the first buried king in Westminster Abbey.

In 1245, King Henry III decided to rebuild the abbey in a new style of architecture - the Gothic. According to the decree of Henry III, Westminster Abbey was intended not only as a great monastery and a place for prayer, but also as a place for coronations and burial rites of monarchs.Since the time of the ascension to the throne of William the Conqueror, the coronation of the monarchs of England took place in Westminster Abbey. In the church, you can still see the ancient throne for the coronation.
