The Tower of London

There are many historical sites and buildings in London and one of them is the Tower of London.

The Tower of London, which stands on the north bank of the Thames, is the historic center of London, one of the oldest buildings in England and one of the main symbols of Britain, occupying a special place in the history of the English nation. 

The history of this fortress is variegated: it was originally built as a defensive castle, and then it served as a zoo, and a mint, and a prison, and an observatory, and a storehouse of royal treasures. It was founded by Julius Caesar and in 1078 rebuilt by William The Conqueror.From the first years of its existence, the Tower began to overgrow with all sorts of rumors and legends, sometimes very sinister.

Today, the Tower of London looks almost the same as in the 11th century. Its main purpose is the museum with the rich collection and the armory;also the Crown Jewels are kept here. Officially, the fortress continues to be considered one of the royal residences. There are several private apartments where the staff and sometimes distinguished guests live.

   

                                                                           

The fortress is also known for its guards, who are called beefeters. Officially they appeared in 1485, but the fortress walls are still jealously preserved to this day. 

There is another interesting post here - Ravensmaster - the caretaker for the ravens. For centuries, these birds are the legal inhabitants of the fortress. And so that the birds do not fly away, they constantly cut their wings. This is due to a legend that says that when the ravens leave the tower, the entire English monarchy will fall. So the caretakers take such drastic measures.

The Tower of London is considered to be the historic center of the capital of Great Britain and thousands of tourists flock to this place in order to touch the most ancient structure of England and get acquainted with its inexplicable facts of the past.
